On Friday evening, July 3, 2026, Barbara Dickens peacefully entered the gates of Heaven, surrounded by the people she loved most—her devoted husband of 43 years, James; her daughter, Stephanie; her son, Kenneth; her daughter-in-law, Andrea; and her two oldest grandchildren, Laci and Maddox. While her other grandsons, Cade, Glavin, Bennett, and Cole, were too young to be there that evening, there is no doubt they were always close to her heart. She was welcomed into Heaven completely healed.

Barbara was born on November 24, 1952, in Washington, D.C., to her loving mother, Velma Driscoll. Although she was born in D.C. because it was the closest hospital, her family called Arlington, Virginia, home at the time. She was the youngest of three daughters, following her sisters, Martha “Marty” and Carolyn. Barbara spent her early childhood in Memphis, Tennessee, before moving with her family to Pensacola, Florida, in 1957, where she would build a beautiful life filled with love, lifelong friendships, and countless cherished memories.

Barbara was, first and foremost, love.

She loved with everything she had. She was the very best wife, Mama, and Nana. Loving her family wasn’t just something she did—it was simply who she was. She cared deeply, loved fiercely, and gave every piece of herself to the people she cherished. Her family was her greatest joy, and there was never a question of how much she loved them. They felt it every single day.

She shared a beautiful 43-year marriage with the love of her life, James. Together they built a life centered on family and unconditional love. Their love story was one that so many admired, and their devotion to one another never wavered.

Barbara’s greatest title was “Nana.” Nothing made her smile more than her grandchildren. Maddox, Laci, Cade, Glavin, Bennett, and Cole brought endless joy to her life, and she treasured every moment she spent with them.

Many in the Pensacola community will remember Barbara from her years at McRae’s Department Store and later at Belk. After becoming a mother, she devoted herself to raising her family, volunteering countless hours at Pine Meadow Elementary School, touching the lives of teachers and students who still remember her kindness today, and sharing her gift for connecting with people through her many years selling Avon. Once her children were older, Barbara returned to Belk, where her genuine kindness, warm personality, and unforgettable voice made her a favorite among coworkers and loyal customers alike. People didn’t just come to Belk to shop—they came to see Barbara. If you couldn’t find her in the store, all you had to do was stop and listen for her unmistakable voice.

If you knew Barbara, then you knew her. Her voice could fill a room, her laugh was contagious, her smile lit up every space she entered, and her beautiful blue eyes reflected the kindness and love she carried in her heart. She had a remarkable way of making everyone feel welcome, valued, and loved simply by being herself. We already miss hearing her voice.

Barbara’s life was marked by incredible strength. She faced more health battles than anyone should ever have to endure. She fought multiple cancers, diabetes, countless surgeries, lengthy hospital stays, setbacks, and obstacle after obstacle. Yet no matter how sick she became or how difficult life was, she never skipped a beat. Through every surgery, every hospital stay, and every setback, she remained strong. She held tightly to her faith, kept her beautiful smile, and never stopped loving her family with everything she had. We watched her fight with courage that most of us could only hope to have.

Even on the hardest days, she chose hope. Even in pain, she chose love. Her faith in God carried her through every trial, and now that same faith has brought her home, where she is whole, healthy, and forever at peace.

Barbara leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured by years, but by the countless lives she touched through her kindness, compassion, selflessness, and unwavering love. She taught us that family is life’s greatest blessing and that love is found in the everyday moments we share with one another.

While our hearts are broken and the emptiness she leaves behind is impossible to put into words, we find comfort in knowing this is not goodbye—it is simply “see you later.” One glorious day, we will hear her voice again, see that beautiful smile, and be reunited with her.

To the world, Barbara was a kind, compassionate, and remarkable woman. But to us, she was simply our wife, our Mama, and our Nana—the heart of our family. That is the loss we will carry every day. We will miss her voice, her hugs, her laughter, her love, and the way she made our family feel complete. Though our hearts will never be the same, we are forever grateful that she was ours.

A memorial service celebrating Barbara’s beautiful life will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Family-Funeral & Cremation, 5627 North Davis Highway, Pensacola, Florida 32503. Family and friends are invited to join us as we honor her life, share memories, and celebrate the incredible woman she was.

Until then, we will love as she loved, hold our families a little tighter, and carry her memory with us every day. Barbara’s life was a beautiful example of what it means to love well, and that legacy will live on forever in each of us who were blessed enough to call her ours.
