Freda Welch Obituary

Freda Welch, 78, went home to be with the Lord on May 11, 2026. Born on January 27, 1948, in Mohawk, West Virginia, Freda was the daughter of Leck and Lillian Cline - the eleventh of twelve children. She lived a life marked by faith, love, music, and devoted care for others. Over the years, she made homes and memories in West Virginia, Virginia, Louisiana, and Florida, carrying with her a warmth that made people feel welcomed wherever she went.

Freda is survived by her beloved husband of 40 years, Vennie Welch; her son, Tony Roberts (Meredeth); her daughters, Trina Lyles (Bobby) and Kelly Spear (Grant); and her cherished grandchildren, Robert Lyles (Skylar), Jessica Thompson (Max), Kendall, Cami, Tucker, Emmy, and Calvin Spear; as well as her sister Della Paul and brother Jerry Cline. She was a deeply devoted grandmother who lovingly called her grandchildren her “Sugar Men” and “Sugar Plums,” a reflection of the tenderness and joy she brought into their lives.

For ten years, Freda faithfully served at Pensacola Christian College, beginning in the secretarial pool before becoming secretary in the Dean’s Office and later serving as music coordinator. During her years there, she was a “Campus Mom” to many students, offering encouragement, kindness, and a listening ear far from home. After her time at PCC, she continued her career in medical office administration, serving others with the same compassion and dedication.

Freda loved to sing and sew, and her home was often filled with the comforting aromas of homemade meals and baked treats. She found great joy in caring for her family and creating a place where everyone felt loved and gathered close. Her faith in Christ was the foundation of her life, evident in the way she served, loved, and gave so freely to others.

In recent years, Freda courageously battled Alzheimer’s disease, a journey that was difficult for both her and those who loved her dearly. Even through those challenges, the gentleness, warmth, and love that defined her life continued to shine through in countless quiet moments. The disease may have changed many things, but it never erased the deep impact she had on her family, friends, and all who knew her.

A memorial service will be held at Taylor Chapel on St. John Street in Pensacola at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2026, followed by a reception at The Gathering Place. Family and friends are invited to come together to celebrate Freda’s life, her steadfast faith, and the lasting love she leaves behind.
