Pinkey Josephine “P.J.” Aschauer, born January 1, 1951, in Charlton County, Georgia, passed in the early morning hours of May 1, 2026, after a year-and-a-half battle with advanced lung cancer.

P.J. lived an eventful life shaped by adversity, reinvention, resilience, and a sprinkle of absurdity. She possessed an uncanny ability to make something out of nothing — stretching limited resources, finding beauty where others overlooked it, and creating comfort in difficult circumstances. Sharp-witted and funny, those closest to her understood that humor was often how she carried herself through life’s more difficult chapters.

She was not a woman who fit neatly into simple categories, and her life cannot be honestly summarized that way. Like many families, hers carried both closeness and distance across decades, but every thread of that story remained part of its fabric. Those who knew P.J. understood that love in her world was rarely simple, but it was always sincere.

In her later years, she cultivated a determination to live more gently than previous circumstances had often allowed. While healing every wound, righting every wrong, and repairing every relationship is humanly impossible, those who knew her during this chapter experienced someone committed to doing and being better. She gave freely of herself in quiet but meaningful ways—growing food for friends in her senior community, cooking meals for neighbors, and tapping into her artistic and creative talents to help others whenever she was able.

Living simply and independently, she built a life that finally brought her peace, dignity, and pride in herself. Her story was imperfect, complicated, profoundly human, and entirely her own. Those who knew her best understood something important about P.J.: she believed, and ultimately proved, that people are capable of change. No matter what has come before, each new day offers another chance to shape one’s legacy.

P.J. leaves behind her children, Eric Ganey and Jennifer Ashchi, along with extended family, lifelong friends, neighbors, and many others whose lives she touched with her humor, care, creativity, strength, and persistence.

True to who she was, P.J. requested that there be no formal gathering or memorial service of any kind. Instead, she hoped the people whose lives crossed hers would remember her in ways that felt comfortable and individually authentic — sharing stories around a kitchen table, planting something in the ground, laughing loudly, sipping sweet tea in a rocking chair, lighting up a little of Mother Earth’s medicine, or throwing back a cold one, only when and where they saw fit to do so.
