Stephen William Yates, 75, of Pensacola, FL passed away unexpectedly on January 2nd, 2026 at Ascension Sacred Heart in Pensacola, Florida.
Born on January 17th, 1950 in Springfield, Ohio, Stephen grew up in a close‑knit household under the guidance of his parents, William G. Yates and Barbara Jean Grove. He attended Ohio State University, where he began developing the discipline and sense of duty that would define his life.
Stephen answered that call of service with a distinguished 27‑year career in the United States Navy. He served honorably in both Vietnam and the Gulf War, earning the respect of his shipmates and the gratitude of a nation. After retiring from the Navy, he applied the same dedication to his passions as an avid hunter and fisherman, often sharing stories of his outdoor adventures with friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Sherry Yates, his sons Heath and Keith Wade, his father William G. Yates, his mother Barbara Jean Grove, and his brother Jimmy Yates.
Stephen is survived by his daughter Connie Ayres, son‑in‑law Daryl Ayres, son Roger Bashaw, twelve grandchildren, and six great‑grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on January 30, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. at Family Funeral & Cremation. Following the service, Stephen will be laid to rest with full military honors at Barrancas National Cemetery, a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to serving his country.
