Darrell DeVaughn Rutherford, 78 of Pensacola died on January 31, 2017.
August 2, 1944-January 30, 2017
Cassandra was born Aug. 2, 1944 in New York ( Manhattan ) New York to the proud parents William P. Browne and Sofi ( Markovetz ) Browne of New York. She was their second child. She was destined to live a wonderful and diverse life. She and her family moved in stages, from Manhattan eastward to the eastern tip of Long Island in the city of Riverhead building homes along the way. She attended public schools (beginning in P.S. 109) and graduated from Babylon High in 1962. In 1964 she journeyed alone from the Idlewild Airport to Heathrow in London to visit her Irish kinfolk and study her Irish heritage. This began her love affair with everything Irish. It would be over 30 years before she returned to the Emerald Isle, but she corresponded faithfully with her Irish family. We visited Ireland in 1995 and last visited in May 2016. We had the distinct pleasure of taking our younger daughter Elizabeth (and Mike) with us to meet the next Irish generation. Cassandra loved to celebrate St. Patrick's Day every year, and always prepared Irish meals for her family and friends. Cassandra was an aspiring actress. At the age of 19 she was on stage in an off-Broadway production of "Once Upon a Mattress. " Her father would tease her about being the next Sarah Bernhardt. She was a lifelong member of the Girl Scouts of America and, for many years, a leader in Virginia and Northwest Florida. She began her professional career as a legal secretary and worked in law firms in New York, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Virginia. She married Lewis M. Agner on Aug. 14, 1971 in New Port Richey, Florida; and was a wonderful wife, confidant, and mother for over forty-five years. She is preceded in death by her parents William P. Browne and Sofi (Markovetz) Browne. She is survived by her devoted husband Lewis M. Agner; two daughters Mary (Denis Moskowitz) Agner of Somerville, Massachusetts, and Elizabeth (Mike) Lindstrom of Roanoke, Virginia; her brother Paul C. (Alice) Browne of Sarasota, Florida whom she unabashedly loved; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-laws, nieces and nephews. Although she only had a high school diploma, she was an avid student of higher learning. She studied American History with an emphasis on the Civil War. She cherished the writings of David McCollough. She personally visited battle sites in Pennsylvania, and most of the southern states. She loved the German language and her small German class. She was an avid reader as her book club members will attest. She loved to bird watch and insisted the feeders be hung ever so precisely. She loved NFL football and was an ardent New England Patriots addict. She loved everything about Wysocki's American Jigsaw Puzzles. She always had at least one cat all the time. She also loved and doted on them from "Flash Gordon" in 1968 to Itty-bitty" and "Tigger" in 2017. She decried any mistreatment of animals. She was a lifelong pacifist but later in life, she condescended to fire a 45 caliber single action cowboy six-shooter two times in succession. She also loved to go antiquing with Karen. She was an active member in Handley Downs Homeowners Association, and was well respected by all her friends and neighbors. As a girl scout leader, she influenced many young girls in the Northwest Florida area, and befriended many of their families. Cassandra loved her husband, her daughters, her brother and all her extended family. She will be sorely missed.
