![]() Robert Kennedy Childs, 73, the son of James F. and Thelma K. Childs, was born on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1949, in Lake Wales, Florida. He passed away Christmas Eve, December 24, 2022, in Pensacola, Florida. As a boy growing up in rural central Florida, he enjoyed time with family and friends, outdoor activities, listening to music, birdwatching, woodworking, and participating in church events. He became an Eagle Scout at the age of 15. He served six years in the Army National Guard. He married Gail in Lake Wales, Florida in 1975. His faith in God, love of his family, and being an Eagle Scout were very important to him. His gift of service to others is how he lived his life. He was patient, gentle, a good listener, quick-witted, always willing to help others, and shared a genuine smile. After graduating from Lake Wales High School in 1967 Robert earned three college science degrees: Polk Community (State) College graduating with honors (Winter Haven), Florida Institute of Technology in oceanographic engineering (Melbourne) and the University of West Florida in marine biology (Pensacola). Although unrelated to the marine sciences, Robert spent his 46-year career working as a medical laboratory scientist at Sacred Heart, Baptist, and Gulf Breeze Hospitals in the Pensacola area. Robert and Gail enjoyed life: living on a sailboat, and refurbishing a 28' sailboat in their front yard, He hiked on the Appalachian Trail, around Lake Okeechobee, and on parts of the Florida Trail. He enjoyed visiting relatives in North Carolina and Minnesota (where he once went dogsledding for a week). He canoed the Okefenokee Swamp and participated in an Audubon Christmas Bird Count in northern Minnesota with a temperature of -35 degrees. He loved all animals, especially cats and birds. His favorite hobby was woodworking, which he did most of his life beginning with building the Key Club trophy case in high school, making items as intricate as the butterfly cross, designing and building a camper to fit in the back of his truck, designing and building his 16' x 32' woodworking shop, and building cabinets. Robert volunteered his time and talents to groups at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Habitat for Humanity, and his Pine glades neighborhood. He designed and built the 2nd Little Free Library in Pensacola, which was the first one allowed on city property. In 2017, Robert and Gail moved to Azalea Trace in Pensacola. He continued helping residents and employees there with woodworking projects, volunteering on the recycling team, the Building and Grounds committee, and serving on the Resident Council. Robert leaves behind Gail Childs, the love of his life for 54 years and wife of 47 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James William Childs. He is also survived by a sister, Ann (Tom) McConnell; nephew, Evan (Elizabeth) McConnell and great nephew Ethan; niece, Caitlin (Joe) Craigle and great niece Cirilla; and his sister-in-law, Cindy Turner. The family would especially like to thank April, Roger, and Jennifer of Willow Brooke Court at Azalea Trace for their compassion and care when it was needed most. Donations in memory of Robert may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church 3400 Bayou Blvd. ![]() Donald M. Kenney, age 89 of Pensacola, Florida, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on December 24, 2022. Don was born on August 15, 1933, in Valley Head, West Virginia, to Thurman John and Carrie Winifred Kenney. He was the second of eight children and grew up among the hills, hollers, and cricks of the Appalachian Mountains. After graduating from Tygart’s Valley High School in West Virginia, Don went to Detroit to work as a machinist. It didn’t take long for him to realize that factory work was no better than mine work and he didn’t see either one in his future. In 1955, Don enlisted in the United States Navy. In 1956, Don married Beverly Jo Hamrick of Valley Head, West Virginia, and, together, they traveled the world, raised a family, and as Beverly said, “lived a good life.” Don retired from the United States Navy in 1982 having reached the rank of Master Chief — an achievement of which he was particularly proud. After retiring from the Navy, he joined the United States Postal Service where he embarked on a second career. Don retired from the Postal Service in 2001. Don was a devoted husband and loving father. He had a happy countenance and always greeted his family with a hug, a kiss, and an easy smile and laugh. His siblings considered him the “mother hen” of the clan because he was constantly checking on everyone’s whereabouts and what everyone was up to. Don loved nature, was an avid birder, and kept a network of bird feeders and bird houses in his backyard that he maintained on a daily basis. He was an expert at identifying native birds and could identify most of them by their sound alone. He was a life-long learner, and a meticulous record keeper. He liked his coffee black, his beer cold, his gumbo steaming hot, and no one loved a good home-cooked meal better. Never idle, he worked every day outside in his yard until the day of his passing. He never complained. He never hesitated to get the job done. He considered all work a joyful endeavor and approached it as such. He was a good man who will be forever missed. Don was predeceased by his father and mother, sisters Eula Hannah and Shirley Swecker, and brother Steve Kenney. He is survived by his wife, Beverly, daughter Devon Kenney, son Michael (Deborah) Kenney, sisters Faye (Barry) Iselin and Jean Hamrick, and brothers Roy (Joyce) Kenney and Paul (Dorothy) Kenney. ![]() Diane Lee Ingvoldstad, 83, died peacefully 22 Dec 2022. Born to Violet (Winden) and Manford (Manny) Sjoquist, raised in Willmar, MN. With one set of grandparents next door and the other just a bike ride away. She went to Waldorf Jr. College, Forest City, Iowa, where we met September 1958. She took me to her family's home for Thanksgiving that year. Diane became a stewardess (not a flight attendant) for Trans World Airways for two years while I was a Marine Corps Aviation Cadet at flight school in Pensacola. When I got my wings, we got married and moved to Camp Pendleton, Ca., our first of nine duty stations over the next 20 years. She loved those years of Marine Corps life, not so much my Viet Nam combat tours, those were hard on her. We have two beautiful daughters (inside and out), Laura Lee (Gerry) Carson and Kristen Diane(Scott) Carmine, her proudest accomplishments. NAS Whiting, Milton, Fl. was our last duty station, arriving in 1978. She was heavily involved in many aspects of our church, was a teacher's assistant in ESE classes, a hospice volunteer, and an early intervention specialist with United Cerebral Palsy of Pensacola for many years where she developed "Kids Tech Corner," working mainly with autistic children. She had a way with them. Diane put the needs of others ahead of her own, whether her girls or others she served. She was truly a giving, self-less soul. At the age of 61 (after proudly conquering Statistics) she graduated from Troy State. Diane is survived by her husband of 58 years, Orlando (Lanny) Ingvoldstad, Maj. USMC, Ret, our daughters, her brother, Brian (Val) Sjoquist, sister Belle Milner, and grandchildren Gregory Lee, Jenna Beth, and Matthew James. According to her wishes, no funeral service will be held. A private burial will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery. Special thanks to the caring staff of Sandy Ridge Rehab Center Milton, Fl. who saw us through her last days. Thank you!
